STENOMAX

TRADITION, REPUTATION, AND SUCCESS

The StenoMax Institute was incorporated in January 2000 to continue the home study program formerly provided by the Home Study Division of the Stenotype Institute of Jacksonville, Inc.

The Stenotype Institute was founded as a resident court reporting school in 1940 by Thyra D. Ellis.  Ms. Ellis, herself a graduate of the Lasalle Institute (the original accredited home study program in the U.S.), was a pioneer in the field of machine reporting.  She was responsible for many of the standards now required for certification as an RPR (Registered Professional Reporter).  A Merit Reporter, she indeed may have been the best-known reporter worldwide because of her many years of work in court and at meetings and conventions for hundreds of national and international corporate clients.

The StenoMax Institute was created in order to provide a distinct identity and a more tightly focused concentration on home study education.  StenoMax employs selected instructors from the Stenotype Institute on a part-time basis as faculty for the home study program.

The StenoMax Institute will continue to maintain skill requirements a cut above the minimum standards set by the NCRA.  The requirement of a transcript accuracy rate of 97.5 percent on literary, jury charge, and two-voice testimony should make it easier to pass the NCRA-administered RPR (Registered Professional Reporter) exam, which requires an accuracy level of 95 percent.

Immediately after graduation, all of these home study/resident graduates successfully launched their careers as working court reporters.  While this placement success since 1995 cannot be predictive of future results, it is clearly a mark of teaching excellence and placement assistance, as well as a tribute to the dedication and self-discipline of our students.

Note:   These are all court reporting graduates and are not a combined, undifferentiated list of medical transcriptionists, scopists, court reporting assistants, and court reporters.
